For the past five years, we've operated entirely on zero-carbon electricity, actively reducing our carbon footprint as we produce premium-quality cardboard tubes, industrial cores, carpet tubes, label cores, and tape cores.
However, at JPT, we believe good enough isn't good enough. From the 1st of April 2025, we're thrilled to announce our electricity supply will upgrade from zero-carbon to 100% renewable energy.
Understanding Zero-Carbon vs. Renewable Energy
You might wonder what differentiates "zero-carbon" from "renewable" energy—and why this upgrade is crucial.
According to industry definitions (such as British Gas), zero-carbon energy includes renewable sources like wind, solar, and hydro, alongside nuclear power and biomass. Although zero-carbon sources do not produce carbon dioxide during electricity generation, nuclear fuel is finite and comes with potential environmental risks, while biomass may involve sustainability concerns related to sourcing and biodiversity.
Conversely, renewable energy sources specifically include solar, wind, and hydroelectric power. These renewable options are naturally replenished, offering long-term environmental sustainability. Renewable sources not only eliminate carbon emissions but also significantly reduce ecological impacts, enhance energy independence, and avoid the risks associated with nuclear waste and unsustainable biomass sourcing.
Our transition to 100% renewable electricity at Just Paper Tubes ensures our operations remain genuinely sustainable and environmentally responsible, avoiding the pitfalls associated with other zero-carbon sources.
Our Renewable Commitment—Expanding Solar Capacity
Alongside sourcing external 100% renewable electricity, JPT continues to expand our on-site renewable generation. Within the next few months, we're installing an additional 50kW of solar panels, bringing our total solar capacity to an impressive 230kW.
This investment reduces our reliance on external energy suppliers and strengthens our position as industry leaders in environmental responsibility. It ensures a significant part of our energy is directly sourced from renewable resources, enhancing environmental benefits and providing resilience against energy price fluctuations.
Transparency and True Sustainability
At JPT, transparency is key, particularly regarding sustainability. Our customers value straightforward and honest communication, and we've consistently shared our progress, achievements, and future ambitions.
While we fully support industry investments aimed at benefiting the environment, we also believe clarity and transparency are essential.
Recently, one competitor publicly announced an investment in solar energy, adding 380kW to their existing array. Although their commitment to solar power is commendable, the announcement lacks critical transparency. They have not clarified if their electricity supply is entirely zero-carbon or fully renewable, raising doubts about their overall environmental impact.
Simply installing solar panels is admirable, but transparency about the complete sustainability of their energy sources is essential.
At Just Paper Tubes, we're proud of our comprehensive commitment. Every kilowatt-hour of electricity we use will now be 100% renewable, clearly demonstrating our genuine dedication to sustainability.
